Thank you, NPRHA!

Many thanks to the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association for their most generous grant! Each year, the NPRHA awards a limited number of grants in the areas of railway history and the preservation of railway heritage including structures, publications, research and educational projects. This year they are helping us with the SP&S 700’s boiler rebuild.

As a little history, in 1937, the SP&S’s parent companies (the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern railways) allowed the SP&S to purchase its first brand new locomotives: three Northerns (4-8-4’s), mainly for passenger service; and six challengers (4-6-6-4s), for freight service. Excepting that the new equipment burned oil instead of coal, these locomotives were identical in design to Northerns and challengers built for the Northern Pacific Railway.

Baldwin Locomotive Works delivered the 700, 701, and 702 in 1938.
